SOUNDTRACK FOR A REVOLUTION
(Bill Guttentag & Dan Sturman, USA, video, 82 min, 2009)
part of the AFRICAN-AMERICAN FILM SERIES
at UWM Union Theatre (2nd floor of Union—2200 E. Kenwood Blvd.)
6:30pm/FREE and open to the public
This film tells the story of the American civil rights movement through the powerful music and the freedom songs of the time- songs protesters sang on picket lines, in mass meetings, in paddy wagons, and in jail cells as they fought for justice and equality. The infectious energy and charged lyrics of these revolutionary chants are rendered anew with performances from contemporary artists including John Legend, Joss Stone, Wyclef Jean, and The Roots, as well as archival footage and interviews with civil rights foot soldiers and leaders Harry Belafonte, Congressman John Lewis, Julian Bond, and Ambassador Andrew Young, among others.

EVENTS FOR SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 19th
UW-Milwaukee Union Theater presents the Milwaukee premiere of
THE STRANGE CASE OF ANGELA
(Manoel de Oliveira, Portugal and other countries, in Portuguese w/Eng st., 97 min, video, 2010)
3:00pm and 7:00pm/$6 public/$5 UWM staff/$4 UWM students
At 102 years old, legendary director Manoel de Oliveira endures in creating inspired, original films. Though deceptively simple, Angelica is no exception, for this fantastic story of impossible love is also reflexive nod to tradition and technology. Set near the Douro River where he made his first film, Douro, Flaina Fluvial (1933), we follow Isaac, a young photographer, who receives an urgent call one night from a wealthy family to come and take the last photograph of their daughter Angelica, who died just a few days after her wedding. At first glimpse Isaac is overwhelmed by her beauty. As soon as he looks at her through the lens of his camera, she appears to come back to life just for him; from that moment on, Angélica will haunt him night and day. Perhaps the director’s final film, it is both playful and dramatic, with whimsical dream sequences invoking his own animated beauty.
AGUIRRE: THE WRATH OF GOD
(Werner Herzog, Germany, in German w/Eng st., 93 mins, 35mm, 1972)
5:00pm and 9:00pm/FREE and open to the public
An arthouse sensation for decades, Aguirre remains a revered cult classic and the most volatile creative collaboration between Herzog and Klaus Kinski. Perhaps the dreams and delusions of the film’s Lope de Aguirre, a menacing 16th century Spanish conquistador who usurps the expedition’s leaders while in search of El Dorado, were a stretch none too far from those of the director and lead actor: Herzog stole the camera from the Munich Film School, shot on location in the Peruvian rainforest and on handmade rafts down the Amazon River, while Kinski’s own explosive, tyrannical behavior continued off-screen (or vice versa). Antics aside, the film established Herzog as a true visionary of modern cinema obsessed with grand themes. The eminent dangers of the jungle are palpable in Thomas Mauch’s lensing, complemented by Popuh Vuh’s hypnotic experimental-synth soundtrack.

FREEDOM RIDERS—a documentary by Stanley Nelson
at UWM UNION THEATRE (2nd floor of UWM Union—2200 E. Kenwood Blvd.)

FREEDOM RIDERS is the powerful and inspirational story of over 400 black and white Americans, who risked their lives and endured brutal treatment traveling together through the Deep South during the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Through the testimonies from the Freedom Riders themselves, state and federal government officials, and journalists who witnessed the Rides firsthand, this award-winning film features the experiences of these individuals who were trying to fight racial injustice through non-violent activism. Executive producer Mark Samels will be present for a post-screening discussion.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ALIA MARIE, THIS WEEK'S GUEST SELECTOR
Her own music is “Make Over Music;” which was released independently in September of 2010. “Make Over Music” is an electronic album with splices of R&B, Dub “and the Brazilian sounds I lived in while producing the album. It’s my interpretation of Electronic. It’s melodious, bass heavy and at times, hypnotizing.” There is a youthful energy with hit home messages of self-love, social awareness and expressions of love for others. “I wanted to make an album that made me feel like I do when I listen to my favorite artists. I love Arthur Verocai. He’s great for any occasion and any mood. His compositions break and mend my heart and that’s what I hope to have accomplished with Make Over Music. Above all, music is my life! Creating, sharing and performing are what I live for.”
