THE MILWAUKEE CONSCIENCE INTERVIEW: ADEBISI

This week, ADEBISI served as the guest selector for the Milwaukee Conscience "Song of the Day" feature. Below, he took some time to answer some questions.

MILWAUKEE CONSCIENCE: What inspired you to do this mixtape?

ADEBISI: I drew inspiration from a couple of different sources to complete this mixtape. Originally, I just sought out to record some new material to showcase and express the thoughts and emotions that I had been having over the transitional period of me moving to New York and getting adjusted to a new life in a new city while pursuing my dreams. After compiling most of this new material, I posed a question on my FB page as to what I should title my next mixtape. One of my more vocal FB friends suggested the title "BLAXploitation" and I ran with it.

I'm a guy that loves all things ‘70s and blaxploitation anyway, so I linked up with my roommate and friend DJ Charlie Hustle and he gave me a ton of clips from old ‘70s movies. Things started falling in place after that. The whole title and idea was so perfect, because that's my vibe (the blaxploitation era) and my company name and nickname is BLAX. This was such a crucial tape to me because I feel I am at the point in my career where I need to exploit all angles. And since I'm Blax, I felt the game needed a little bit of "BLAXploitation". The homie DJ Laser from the Bronx helped complete the tape by taking time out of his busy schedule to cut, copy and paste all of the movie clips on the tape. The homie Reason of 4AR Music group mixed and mastered the project.

MC: Is there any difference between preparing a mixtape for free download and a full-length album to sell?

ADEBISI: The only major difference I'd say is that with a mixtape that you are giving away for free you have the go ahead to use any beat available even if it's being used by a popular artist because you’re not selling it. With actual albums that are intended for sales purposes, you have to use original music or risk getting slapped with a lawsuit
My recording process is pretty much the same, except for the fact that I mostly "two track" my mixtape songs, meaning that instead of loading all the individual sounds and instruments into the Protools session I usually just load whichever mp3 instrumental into the session and rhyme over it.

MC: The first time I met you was in the spoken word poetry open mic circuit in the early 2000s when you were beginning to develop the BLAX brand. Most recently, a lot of people got to know you as a member of the band Fresh Cut Collective How would you describe your path as an artist, and how do you think each stage have helped you develop over time?

ADEBISI: My path as an artist has been interesting, genuine and humbling. Back when I first formed "BLAX" in the early 2000's I was looking to find my own platform for independence. I had come off a rocky but educational experience as a teenager being signed to a small indie label and after that it left me with a bad taste so I wanted to never be in that position again. So I formed my own entity.

As I entered the Milwaukee open mic circuit the BLAX umbrella helped me to set myself apart from others on the scene. With BLAX, I was able to move how and when I wanted to move and when the checks were cut they were cut to BLAX first. I guess early on I knew that in order for me to reach the heights that I wanted to reach I'd have to be comfortable making independent moves.

Fresh Cut Collective is my bastard love child which I helmed the reigns for and helped form from 2008-2010. The experience from that was so dope because it grew organically from 5 guys smoking weed and playing music in a factory space to a local phenomenon. And it happened so quickly. I was happy with all that I helped the band accomplish. However, it was simply time for me to move on to pursue a greater goal. We are still connected and play shows together, though. I just can't be there for all of the local ones like I once was.

These stages just matured me as an artist with every growing experience. My song writing has improved as well as my stage performance. I've also learn to become a better more caring and humble person through my development as an artist.

MC: Last fall, you moved out to New York City to further your opportunities to create music. How has this experience been for you?

ADEBISI: I love New York. This city has opened up a wealth of knowledge, wisdom and great people to me. The opportunities to network and meet people are limitless and the possibilities of you actualizing and reaching your goals are right at your finger tips.

MC: Have you had a chance to correspond with other Milwaukee-to-NYC transplants, or anyone else from the Midwest since you’ve moved?

ADEBISI: Well for starters my roommate DJ Charlie Hustle is from Riverwest, and his family owns one of my favorite MKE waterholes "The Uptowner." My homegirl, buddha and guide, the ever talented emcee Signif, is also from Milwaukee. We rock together on the regular. I meet a ton of folk from the midwest out here. The surprising thing is the amount of Brewers hats I see. Too bad most of the people wearing them just like the logo and know nothing about the team...lol.

MC: What are your plans for future projects, music or otherwise?

ADEBISI: I'll be releasing 3-4 more videos from "The BLAXploitation". After those cycle through, I'll be releasing "The BLAXploitation pt2", which will be another themed mixtape except with all original tracks. After that, I'll finally be releasing my sophomore full length ep "Hard Money".

In between all these projects I'll be releasing videos, booking shows and shopping projects around. Follow me on twitter at http://twitter.com/BLAXLIFE. You can find links to all of my previous release at http://adebisi-epk.blogspot.com/.

SUSAN KERNS on what inspired her to choose the theme SUNSHINE for this week's songs...

I'm thinking about sunshine because this gray, 45-degree weather is killing me! Every time I see the sun, I think, "This is it! It's going to get warm now! Summer is here!" and then it starts raining. Ugh.

SUSAN KERNS is Education Director at Milwaukee Film, Co-Founder of Gal Friday Films, and an Instructor in the English Department at UW-Milwaukee. She wishes Milwaukee had more French pop dance parties.
